Ikea Buys Back Its Old Furniture

Last year, IKEA launched a "Buy Back and Resell" program that allowed customers to sell their used furniture for store credit. To the dismay of many U.S. customers, the program was initially only available internationally. But after a successful pilot at IKEA's Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, store, the program has finally rolled out to 33 locations across the United States. To make the program that much sweeter, IKEA will also introduce an "As-Is" section, where gently-used items will get a second life.
The initiative, which aims to help reduce the number of home furnishing products thrown out, is part of IKEA's push to promote sustainable living. "At IKEA, we are passionate about making sustainable living easy and affordable for the many, and want to be part of a future that's better for both people and the planet," says Jennifer Keesson, Country Sustainability Manager at IKEA U.S. "We hope the Buy Back & Resell service inspires our customers to live a more sustainable life at home while giving their used furniture another life and a second home," she adds.
The program will run from November 1st to December 5th as an exclusive perk for IKEA family members. (See here to join the IKEA family for free.) At this time, the retailer will only accept fully-assembled IKEA furniture without modifications (sorry, IKEA DIY-ers!). To participate, customers will need to fill out an online form to confirm item eligibility. If your items are accepted, the retailer will email you a quote, and then you're free to head to a participating location to sell your used furniture.
