Council saves money and our enviroment

Excellent way of saving money and the environment by making vehicles last a reasonable length of time. After all far more damage is made to the environment building new vehicles than will come out the exhaust of present vehicles. Broxtowe Bin Lorry Gets A Cost-Saving Facelift
Around £140,000 has been saved by Broxtowe Borough Council in 2017/2018 by refurbishing a bin lorry to add to its frontline fleet.
The Deputy Mayor of the Borough, Councillor Michael Brown visited the Council’s Waste and Recycling Depot in Kimberley earlier The Deputy Mayor in the new bin lorryto see the vehicle last week.

The vehicle has been refurbished at a cost of £28,000 compared to £168,000 for the cost of a new vehicle. The refurbishments will prolong the life of the vehicles by an additional four to five years, which will see them collect around 1.5 million bins.

Previously the Council renewed vehicles after seven years but has introduced the new refurbishment initiative to help the balance the books to help meet the budget challenge.

The vehicles were refurbished by Dennis Eagle based in Aldridge West Midlands.

“Vehicle refurbishment is just one example of how the Council is saving money whilst at the same time continuing to provide a quality service for our residents. Refurbishing vehicles makes sound economic sense and the Council has made savings in the region of £500,000 over a five year period which represents excellent value for money” said Councillor Shane Easom, Chair of the Leisure and Environment Committee.

The Council currently has 18 refuse vehicles which collect approximately 37,000 tonnes of waste and recycled materials every year across the Borough.
